Some of you may have noticed the user poll at the end of the page. Not only will I cover some news for cord cutters this week, but I thought I’d go over the poll results of those who frequent the site. It will give you an idea of where other Grounded Reason readers are in regard to cord cutting. If you have a question you would like me to add to the poll, please let me know in the comments
Cord Cutter News
Comcast Drops Bid for Fox
In a deal that will impact many cord cutters, Comcast dropped its pursuit of purchasing several Fox-owned channels and Fox’s 30% share of Hulu. Comcast and Disney also own 30% of Hulu. Therefore, whoever closes this deal will have a majority ownership stake in Hulu.
As a cord-cutter, I am much more comfortable with Disney calling the shots at Hulu over Comcast. Considering the FCC repeal of Net Neutrality, Comcast could have leveraged Hulu to box out other streaming services, ultimately to the detriment of cord cutting. We should all breathe a sigh of relief on this one.
Cord Cutting Keeps Accelerating
According to a survey published Tuesday by New York consulting firm Cg42, 5.4 million consumers will drop their pay TV subscription and cut the cord. Cg42 estimate the number of cord cutters will almost hit 19 million. That’s an increase of 600% since 2014. Cord Cutting is becoming less of a trend and more of a standard.
How much do you spend on Internet, Cable TV, and Phone every month?
- 16.64% Spend under $100
- 50.72% Spend between $100 – $200
- 21.59% Spend over $200
- 11.05% have already cut the cord
Considering that it’s possible to cut the cord and watch the TV you want for under $100 it looks like almost 73% of Grounded Reasons readership would benefit financially from cutting the cord.
How many internet service providers offer usable broadband in your area?
- 17.69% have 3
- 41.03% have 2
- 14.77% have more than 3

It looks like the average Grounded Reason reader is doing much better than the average American when it comes to ISP availability. According to a 2015 report, 78% of the country had 1 or 0 ISPs providing speeds over 25 Mbps. Perhaps I will rephrase the questions to see how we line up with this report.
How fast is your internet connection?
- 47.29% had between 25 and 100 Mbps
- 29.55% had 100 Mbps or More
- 14.19% had between 10 and 25 Mbps
- 8.96% had under 10 Mbps
Wow! 91% of the readership has more than 10 Mbps of Internet bandwidth. That’s great news!
Do you plan on cutting the cord in the next 90 days?
- 62.25% said Yes
- 11.40% said No
- 26.35% already have cut the cord
So it seems only 11% of readers are hesitant about cutting the cord. I honestly thought that number would be a lot higher. It looks like more people are catching on to the savings that can be had once you ditch your pay TV subscription.
