Here is news that may interest current and soon to be cord cutters for the week leading up to August 2nd
NFL Preseason Kicks Off
The Hall of Fame Game is tonight, marking the start of the 2018 NFL preseason. I have updated our guide on how to watch the NFL preseason without cable. This year’s Hall of Fame Game will see the Chicago Bears face off against my hometown Baltimore Ravens in Canton Ohio. The game will air on NBC but you can also stream the game using a 1-week free trial to FuboTV.
DirecTV Now Adds NFL Network
The Good news is DirecTV Now finally added NFL Network allowing you to stream NFL Network online. Unfortunately, it’s only available at their higher tiered “Just Right” package at $55 per month. This makes it the highest priced method for cord cutters to watch the NFL network. Subscribers to Sling TV get NFL network for over half that price at $25 per month. FuboTV offers a package that includes NFL Network for $45 a month and Playstation Vue offers one for $50 per month.
Furthermore, the package doesn’t include NFL Redzone and there is still no word on when NFL Sunday Ticket will be widely available to cord cutters.
2 Scams Targeting Cord Cutters
There are 2 types of scams right now that are specifically geared toward cord cutters. With our numbers growing so rapidly, those looking to con people out of their hard earned money have turned an eye our way.
The first is a basic phishing scheme where you receive an email that looks like it’s from a streaming service you use. The email usually claims there is some billing issue, technical issue, free gift, or other reason you need to update your account. Once you click the link you are then prompted to log in or supply some information. However, the link isn’t from your streaming service. It’s from a someone pretending to be your streaming service looking to get your login or personal information.
If you ever receive an email requesting an information update from any service you use, it’s best to never click the link. Instead, close the email, open your browser, go to the service’s website and log in normally. You can then check to see if you truly need to update your information.
The next scam is false advertisement. With all the talk of cord-cutting, fly by night antenna companies are selling a plain antenna claiming that they use special technology to catch the satellite cable companies use and provide you with channels you see on cable. These antenna companies are a scam. There isn’t such a product that does this, and if there was it would be violating FCC regulations. When using an antenna, you will only receive channels broadcast from local TV towers in your area and not basic cable TV.
