It looks like Sling TV is currently back in the lead for best live streaming cable TV alternative. As of November 11th, PLayStation Vue has dropped all of it’s Viacom owned channels from it’s service.
According to a post on Sony PlayStation Vue’s blog Sony has “determined that removing the bundle of channels from Viacom is the best way for us to continue to offer the most compelling value to our fans.”
This removes about 20 channels channels in all from the Vue lineup. This includes BET channels, Centric, CMT channels, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV channels, Nickelodeon channels, Spike, Tr3s, TV Land and VH1. This will also remove any of these network’s shows recorded in Vue’s cloud DVR.
While it does little to offset the channels lost in the removal of Viacom owned content, Vue is adding BBC America, NBA TV, and Vice to their lineup. According to their blog they also indicate “more local broadcast stations from CBS and Fox coming soon.”
The loss of the Viacom channels has been updated on our Sling TV vs Playstation Vue channel page. With DirectTV planning to release DirectTV Now any day now, PlayStation Vue is at a severe disadvantage in the live TV streaming wars.
I’ve always viewed Sling TV and PlayStation Vue to be fairly even when it comes to content. PlayStation Vue may have had a slight advantage with their cloud based DVR. However, with the loss of so many channels, Sling TV seems like the clear choice between the two.
That said, there are still some channels that you can only find on PlayStation Vue. Therefore, I recommend looking into each service thoroughly before making your decision. Both channels offer free trials, so you can always take each for a test drive. Neither service forces you into a long term contract, so there is little risk to consumers making a choice they will regret.
