Starz Without Cable on Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is now offering Starz and Showtime as add-on package for 8.99 a month per network. This is part of their “Streaming Partners Program” and no cable TV subscription is necessary. While Showtime is already available to cord cutters, this is big news for those looking to watch Starz without a cable TV subscription.

I have long thought Amazon Prime was a better cord cutting solution for a back catalog of movies and TV shows. The addition of Starz and Showtime make it a great candidate to replace Netflix for those looking to consolidate streaming services.

If you do not already have Amazon Prime, you can sign up here for a 30 day free trial. During the trial, you can try both Showtime and Starz free for 7 days. You can add the additional subscription package through your Amazon Prime channel on Roku and Amazon Fire TV, or sign up through your account on their website.

Amazon Prime Streaming Partners Program

Through this new program, Amazon Prime subscribers can add channels a la carte. You can even change which channels you add on a monthly basis.

Current add-on channels include Showtime, Starz, the Lifetime Movie Club, AMC’s Shudder and SundanceNow subscription services, Comedy Central’s Standup+ Service, Acorn TV, Dramafever, the Dove Channel, IndieFlix and Ring TV Boxing.

Prime has done a great job of consolidating all this content under one subscription umbrella and Amazon plans to keep adding content partners in the future.

What is Available on Starz

Subscribing to Starz through Amazon Prime opens up the Starz TV and movie library. This includes Starz originals like “Ash vs Evil Dead”, “Black Sails”, “Outlander”, “Spartacus” and more.

I for one have been saddened by not having access to “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”  I’ve been a huge Sam Raimi fan since I saw the Original “Evil Dead” so missing this series has been tough.  Amazon Prime has finally answered my cord cutting wishes.

Showtime on Amazon Prime

Showtime has been available through Hulu and iTunes for some time. The service is very similar to what is offered through those existing providers.  Through Amazon Prime, Showtime subscribers will have access to all movies and TV shows available to Showtime cable TV subscribers.

This includes original programming like Homeland, Penny Dreadful, Ray Donovan, The Affair and more. Check out my post on watching Showtime without Cable for more information.

Amazon Prime is a Must Have

With the content available through Amazon Prime, it is now the cornerstone of my cord cutting solution. Coupled with an over the air antenna and Sling TV, many boxes are checked when it comes to living a cable TV free life.

When you factor all the other benefits included with Amazon Prime, the deal is too good to pass up.

  • I just found this blog today and really appreciate the detail you put into it! Because of that I have been able to convince my husband to cut the cord. Of course we had to wait until the Premiere League Soccer season ended - so we will be watching your blog to see any updates on that.

My question today is regarding the STARZ subscription service on Amazon Prime. I signed up thinking that i would be able to see the current season of Outlander - which didn't seem to be the case. Perhaps I chose the wrong option, or am doing something wrong. If that is the case, do you know if they have plans to have current season showing through streaming via Prime?

    • Hi Lucy, I'm glad I could help convince your husband. Let him know that I think I have a way to circumvent the blackout on English Prem in the U.S. I don't want to post it though until I actually test it out. I'll have something put together when next season starts.

As for Starz, it's not available though Hulu (they have ShowTime). However, you can get it through an add on to Amazon Prime video. They also recently made Starz available to anyone regardless of whether they have a cable subscription or not. Just go here and sign up. this is a new development, so I will update this article soon.

  • Cutting the cord!! Thanks for all your reviews! Going with Amazon Prime and Sling TV.

  • Are you saying that I will not be getting Season 3 of Outlander on STARZ?
    It premiers this weekend?

How am I supposed to watch it?????

    • No, it will be on Starz. The article explains how you can get Starz without a Pay TV subscription.
