The Rockford Peaches are back in town in the new Prime Video series A League of Their Own, premiering on Friday, August 12. Based on Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 film, the new series follows a fresh group of players in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), who are following their dreams to play professional baseball in the first-ever women’s league during WWII. While the show captures much of the comedy, emotions, and charm of the film, it also opens up the storytelling to a broader range of experiences and stories for the women. From confronting issues of sexuality and identity to following the stories of Black players searching for an opportunity beyond the all-white league, it brings a more nuanced perspective to the story.
The first episode introduces the line up of Peaches, from awkward small-town housewife Carson (Abbi Jacobson) who struggles with her identity to fast-talking New Yorkers Greta (D’Arcy Carden) and Jo (Melanie Field) who are very upfront about everything. In a parallel story, hard-pitching Max (Chanté Adams) is determined to find her way onto a team despite segregation in the league, with the support of her comic-book loving best friend Clance (Gbemisola Ikumelo). The series will also feature Nick Offerman as the team’s coach, Casey “Dove” Porter. Read on for more on how to watch A League of Their Own.
