In 1994, the romantic comedy that would be the hallmark and launching pad of more than two decades of great British comedies debuted, Four Weddings and a Funeral. The film began a generation of rom-coms by writer Richard Curtis, including Love Actually, Notting Hill, and About Time. Now, Curtis is passing the torch to a very modern voice in a 21st-century romantic comedy, The Mindy Project creator/writer/star Mindy Kaling, as Four Weddings and a Funeral is relaunched as a 10-episode series, coming to Hulu this summer.
With Kaling and Curtis co-producing, and Kaling and Matt Warburton (The Mindy Project) writing the show, the series will take inspiration from Curtis’ film, but reinvented in a very modern way, with a new story that finds four American friends reuniting in England. They are gathering for a posh London wedding, only to have it be dramatically derailed and become the unexpected catalyst for a year of turbulence and change in all their lives. Complete, of course, with four weddings and a funeral.
The story starts with Maya, a New York political communications director, played by Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei on Game of Thrones). Upon receiving the invite to her former schoolmate’s wedding, she decides to take a break from her day-to-day life (and complicated romantic entanglement) to travel around England and connect with old friends. Her adventure kicks off with a chance encounter at Heathrow airport, where she meets Kash (Nikesh Patel, Indian Summers, Bedlam), a successful British-Pakistani investment banker, and sparks are kindled. However, there may be complications on the horizon when they discover they have a mutual connection.
What Maya also doesn’t expect is to become embroiled in the chaos of her friends’ turbulent lives in England, as scandals, breakups, and new love affairs abound. Central to the story is not just romance, but friendship, and the evolving relationships of the four former college pals, particularly Maya and her best friend Ainsley (Rebecca Rittenhouse). Ainsley herself is struggling to redefine what she wants in her own life, from her family’s expectations to her burgeoning career.
The show also stars John Paul Reynolds (Stranger Things), Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re the Worst), Zoe Boyle (Downton Abbey), Sophia La Porta (The Five), Harish Patel (Coronation Street), and Guz Khan (Curfew). In addition, guest stars include the original film Four Weddings star, Andie MacDowell, and Dermot Mulroney, returning to his romantic comedy roots—hailing from another iconic bridal-themed affair, My Best Friend’s Wedding.
