While on the surface, Mare of Easttown seems like another typical small-town detective show, it’s much deeper when you pull back the layers. The show follows Mare (played by Kate Winslet) as she investigates a recent murder in her small-town Philadelphia suburb while her life seemingly falls apart around her. However, we quickly realize that the show has parallel sub-plots and themes that make the series enjoyable for just about any viewer. First, with a cast of acting powerhouses like Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, Guy Pierce, and Jean Smart, there is no shortage of fully developed characters to relate to (or despise). Then, there are the shows within the show. There is the over-aching mystery that drives the show. We have an unhealthy relationship between Mare and her mother (played by Jean Smart.) Then, we have Mare balance her instincts as a detective with her biases of those she’s grown up with and knows intimately. All this occurs while watching Mare battle her own personal demons. Fans of prestige TV are not going to want to miss this.
