The release of the next generation gaming consoles is right around the corner. PlayStation 5 officially releases on November 12, and it looks like streaming apps aren’t just an afterthought this time around. While the PS 4 offered a media remote (the kind used for your TV), the PlayStation 5 has gone a step further for streamers and cord-cutters.
PS 5 Remote Streaming Buttons
On the PlayStation 5 launch on November 12, customers can also order the PS 5 Media Remote. As you can see in the image above, both Netflix and Disney+ have launch buttons built into the remote. This will allow PS5 owners to launch those apps at the press of a button, stead of navigating through the PS5 menu to launch the app.
While it looks as though the remote buttons are currently reserved for Disney+, Netflix, Youtube, and Spotify, it wouldn’t surprise me if the ability to program these buttons are baked into the PlayStation 5.
Other PS5 Remote Features
Not only will you be able to start streaming apps at the touch of a button, but the PS5 Media Remote will also have the following features:
Media playback controls: Quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward, and fast reverse buttons.
Seamless console compatibility: Power on your PS5 console and navigate its menus directly with the remote for ultimate convenience.
TV settings: Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter**.
Microphone: A microphone is built into this remote, which indicates it can be used for voice commands.
The PS5 as a Video Streaming Device
The PS4 was more than capable of performing as a streaming device, so expect no less from the PS5. This new generation of PlayStation has upgrades in all the right places for video. The CPU is more than double its predecessor’s speed, with a much faster graphics process and double the memory at 16GB. Memory and processing power are crucial to streaming, and the full memory bandwidth allows this beast to process data at 448GB/s, which doubles the performance of the PS4 pro. This console will be one of the more capable ways to stream video on the market.
How to Order the Media Remote
The PlayStation 5 Media Remote retails for $29.99 and will be available on the release day for Playstation 5 (November 12). You can preorder the remote now. There is a limit to 1 per household due to demand for this accessory.
