The space saga about the Robinson family, marooned on a distant planet along with the charismatic Dr. Smith and charming mechanic Don West, found a fresh take in the 2018 Netflix Original series. The show manages to land in the sweet spot between a solid science fiction space adventure and a family-friendly series, focusing primarily on the three Robinson children while keeping the adult storylines exciting and complex. And of course, there is the reinvention of the classic alien robot who utters the iconic “Danger, Will Robinson.” As it enters season 3, now is a great time to rewatch or catch up and enjoy the final saga of the Robinsons’ adventure. More About Lost in Space
Lost in Space is set 30 years in Earth’s future. With the planet in danger, a select number of families and civilians are chosen to join a cross-galaxy journey to start a space colony on a new world. However, the ship is set adrift in space, attacked by aliens (and possible sabotage), and the survivors jettison to a mysterious and alien planet. The story focuses on the Robinson family: mother Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker), an aerospace engineer; father John Robinson (Toby Stephens), a former U.S. Navy SEAL; and their three kids, Will Robinson (Maxwell Jenkins), Judy Robinson (Taylor Russell), and Penny (Mina Sundwall). Will, the youngest, who befriends the mysterious alien robot, is frequently the central focus, although the story spends time with all of the family and their fellow survivors. Initially, the family crashes with just two other travelers, the enigmatic and dangerous Dr. Smith, played with delight by Parker Posey, and the charming mechanic and smuggler Don West (Ignacio Serricchio).
Lost in Space is a reboot of the 1965 series, which are reimaginings of the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson. The series diverts from its original, taking on much more complex and varying storylines, but still retains a family focus. Seeing the younger kids as the focus of many of the adventures is entertaining, and the empathy between Will and his alien robot is some beautiful storytelling. Overall, it is a great science fiction entry point for many ages (although some of the peril might be too intense for young children) and exciting family viewing.
