There are 12 Friday the 13th movies, and honestly, some are skippable. I’ll give you my ideas on the most pleasurable way to enjoy a Friday the 13th marathon later in the article, but if you are a completist, the chronological release order of the films is as follows:
- Friday the 13th – 1980
- Friday the 13th Part 2 – 1981
- Friday the 13th Part III – 1982
- Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter – 1984

Best Way To Watch The Friday The 13th Films
The Friday the 13th franchise starts very strong, and honestly, the 1st movie is a horror classic that can stand by itself. However, if you want an enjoyable experience, just watch the first 4. Those are
- Friday the 13th
- Friday the 13th Part 2
- Friday the 13th Part III
- Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
The first four movies work as a cohesive story that follows an arc, as far as the slasher genre goes. Nearly all fans will agree that these four films are the best of the franchise and work as a great Friday the 13th marathon. Most film fans say the first Friday the 13th is the best one, but my favorite is the 4th installment, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. But maybe I’m just a sucker for early Corey Feldman movies.
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is a film that shouldn’t have been made. The first four films were great and worked as a cohesive story. They even called the 4th one “The Final Chapter.” However, the franchise made a lot of money, and people wanted more, so we were served a 5th one. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is a film hated by most fans, and if you watch it, you’ll find out why. Ultimately, I think this movie is entirely skippable.
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives brings new life into the series with a three-movie arc that takes the franchise in a more supernatural direction. Personally, I feel Jason Lives is the last good Friday the 13th film (Although Freddy Vs. Jason is a lot of fun). The 7th and 8th installments get progressively worse, but if you watch the 6th one, you might as well pop in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.
If you finish eight thinking it will get better, I’m sorry. Jason Goes to Hell is insanely terrible, and Jason X is Jason literally going into Space. However, those movies are campy as hell. If camp is your thing, then I’d check them out. If you are familiar with the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, then Freddy vs. Jason is a treat. If you are in for some campy slasher films, then by all means stream away.
As for the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th, I’m on the fence. It’s a reimagining of the Jason from the first four films. To be fair, I’m not a fan of more recent remakes of 80s slashers like Michael Myers and Freddy. However, If I had to choose, I would say the 2009 remake of the Jason films is the best of those more recent remakes. That said, it’s still not a great horror movie and is entirely skippable.
