With so many great shows available to watch on various streaming services, it’s usually difficult for me to pick a favorite. That isn’t the case since I’ve been watching The Umbrella Academy. It’s easily the most entertaining show I’ve seen in 2020. This Netflix Original is in its second season, and if you like Dark Comedy – Sci-Fi – Action – Dramas, this show is an absolute must-see.
What is The Umbrella Academy About
The show is an adaptation of The Umbrella Academy comic book series, written by Gerard Way (Yes. The guy from My Chemical Romance.) The series is about seven children (Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five, Ben, and Vanya), born on the same day and adopted by an eccentric billionaire named Sir Reginald Hargreeves. All the children but Vanya exhibit powers that Hargreeves uses to assemble them into a child superhero team.
The story takes place in the present where the step-siblings mostly go their separate ways as adults. Luther is a part ape, Allison is a famous actress, Vanya is a violinist, Klaus is a drug addict, Ben, now deceased, is a ghost only Klaus can see. Number 5 is a time-traveling assassin, and Diego is a vigilante. The siblings reunite at the funeral of their recently deceased adoptive father as Number 5 returns from the future to inform them that they need to stop the impending apocalypse in just a few short days.
Why You Should Watch
While the show sounds like a run of the mill superhero series, however, the family dysfunction is unique and tends to be the show’s biggest antagonist. The show also does a fantastic job of editing and cinematography. It’s also one of the best-directed TV series I have ever watched. Ellen Page and Tom Hopper anchor the main cast of relative unknowns. However, the show is exceptionally well-acted with a special mention for the job Aidan Gallagher performs as Five. The character is a lot of fun to watch. Mary J. Blige and Cameron Britton are also very entertaining to watch as two ruthless assassins from the future.
While there has been no word yet on season 3, I’m fairly confident Netflix will give it the green light. Season 1 was one of the top shows streamed on Netflix, and Season 2 was more entertaining than the first. Furthermore, TV show has mapped it’s season 1 and 2 to volume 1 and 2 of the comic series which already has a volume 3 released with Volume 4 already announced.
