The 2014 best-selling novel by Emily St. John Mandel, Station Eleven, comes to TV as a special miniseries, premiering on Thursday, December 16, on HBO Max. The story follows the intertwining lives of survivors of a global pandemic, both in the days leading up to the outbreak, the first 100 days of the fall of society, and 20 years later, as small communities have formed across North America. While in their annual sojourn, a band of survivors who move between communities as a group of performers encounters stories of a violent cult on their route. The story, however, is overall an optimistic one of survival, as well as at times a commentary on the importance of art in society. Read on to learn how to watch Station Eleven without cable.

About Station Eleven
Station Eleven‘s timing is interesting. While the timing of the novel proceeded COVID-19 for several years, there is some question on whether the miniseries comes at a time when people want an optimistic story, or are too bogged down in our genuine pandemic fatigue. Despite the fear and tension of survival, Station Eleven is a story of hope. As we see the pre-and post-pandemic stories play out, the delicate web of connections is a mirror to the art-within-the-art, a throughline carefully created by both the original book’s author and the show’s creator, Patrick Somerville (The Leftovers). The series stars Mackenzie Davis (Happiest Season), Himesh Patel (Yesterday), David Wilmot (Ripper Street), Nabhaan Rizwan (Informer), Philippine Velge (Summer of ’85), Daniel Zovatto (Penny Dreadful: City of Angels), as well as guest performances by Lori Petty and Gael García Bernal.
