The 2021 NHL Season begins Wednesday, January 13 2021 with a shortened 56 game season due to the pandemic. The 2021 NHL Season has also realigned the divisions this year to limit travel. This article will cover those changes and how you can watch every regular-season NHL game this season for every team without cable TV.
NHL Division Realignment
To limit travel this season, for this season the NHL will consist of four divisions. Teams will only play other teams in their division. All the Canadian teams are in the “North” division due to the border being closed to travel. The teams in each division are as follows:
North: Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks
East: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals
Central: Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning
West: Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings, Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues
What This Means for the Playoffs
The regular ends on May 8. The top 4 teams from each division play a best-of-seven, four-round playoff format. The first two rounds will be divisional play. The four division winners advance to the semifinals and are seeded based on their regular-season point totals. The two semifinal teams will play in the Stanley Cup Final. This means we may not see an East Vs. West Stanley Cup Final. Stranger still, the potential exists for scenarios like the Atlantic Division Bruins and Lightning facing each other in the Stanley Cup.
How To Watch Nationally Televised NHL Games
As of this article’s publish date, we know one 150 NHL games will be televised on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), NBC, and NHL Network. Based on what each network has announced, NBCSN will carry 85 games, and NBC will air 16 games. NHL Network has announced their schedule up until the end of February and will air 50 games. We can assume there will be at least that many games airing on NHL Network airing in March, April, and May. The best streaming services to watch NBC, NBCSN, and NHL Network are Fubo TV, AT&T TV, and possibly Sling.
We also now have confirmation that 68 NHL games will stream live to ESPN’s premium streaming service ESPN+
The NHL on Fubo TV
Fubo TV carries NBCSN in their Family Plan. They also carry NBC in over 95% of households in the US. The fuboTV Family plan costs $64.99 per month. NHL Network is available through the “fubo Extra” channel add-on for an additional $7.99 per month. Fubo TV also carries the following Regional Sports Networks airing all games for the following teams:

Watch Every NHL Game
So far we’ve just discussed watching nationally televised NHL Games. If games aren’t nationally televisioned then you two options the first is subscribing to NHL.TV
NHL.TV
NHL.TV is a subscription services that streams every NHL game live. However, games are blacked out if:
- They are nationally televised on NBC, NBC Sports Net, or NHL Network
- You live in the teams TV market and the team is airing on the local regional sports network
We will cover, how to watch your local team’s regional sports network in the next section, and we’ll even cover how to get around the pesky blackout in this one, but first let’s talk about subscribing to NHL.TV.
NHL.TV offers an “All Access Pass” for $99 per month. This will give you the ability to watch every non nationally televised out of market NHL game this season. You also have the option of saving $15 and just watching all of a single team’s games with the “Single Team Pass” for $84.99. There is also an “All Access Monthly Pass” option for $24.99 per month. You can look at the various subscription plans here. NHL.TV features include:
- The ability to watch on iOS and Android Devices. You can also watch on your TV using Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, Xbox, and Playstation. You can also watch on your PC or Laptop with most modern browsers
- Video quality is at 60 frames per second
- access to home and away play-by-play for each game
- DVR controls to pause and rewind live games and jump back to highlights with the interactive timeline
- 5 alternate camera angles, including two over-the-goal cameras and the zipline aerial cam.
- full-length game replays are available in the game archive
Dealing With Blackouts
If you look at NHLTV website, they state, “Blackouts are enforced based on the location of your viewing and not your purchase, so if you are traveling, blackouts will be enforced accordingly.” and they also state, “your location is determined by the IP address you are accessing the service from.” So if you want to watch a game that is blacked out, all you need to do is use a VPN to switch your IP address. We explain how to do this in our article: How To Unblock Sports Blackouts.
