Sling TV Channels, Plans, Prices, and More

Updated on 2023-10-31 By Dennis Restauro

Sling TV has gone through an evolution since it first launched. Sling TV was a pioneer in 2015 as one of the first cable TV alternatives to stream live TV. Since then, Sling TV has continually added channels, making it one of the top live-streaming services available. Let’s look at what Sling TV offers in these plans, and what channels, features, and add-ons are available through Sling TV.

What Is Sling TV

Sling TV is a streaming service that allows you to watch live TV online from TV networks previously only available to cable and satellite TV subscribers. All you need is a streaming device like Roku or Amazon Fire TV to use Sling TV. You download the Sling TV app to your streaming device, and you can watch channels like A&E, TBS, ESPN, Disney, Lifetime, and AMC just as if you had a cable TV subscription.

How Sling TV Different Than Cable

  • Sling is available everywhere in the US. All you need is an internet connection.
  • Sling TV has minimal coverage of local network coverage from channels like Fox, ABC, and NBC. We recommend reading our guide to watching local channels for alternatives.
  • Prices are much lower than cable TV. A basic Sling TV channel packages cost only $40 per month with no contract so you can cancel at any time.
  • There are no device fees as you use your own streaming device instead of a cable box.

What You Need to Use Sling TV

Sling TV is easy to use. All you need is the following:

  • A connection to the internet (at least 5.0 megabits per second (Mbps), but 25 Mbps is recommended to take advantage of full video quality
  • A streaming device like a Roku. (You can use your computer browser or mobile app, but a Smart TV or streaming device is needed to watch on a TV set)
  • A Subscription to Sling TV (They offer a Special pricing for new customers)

Read on for a full list of Sling TV channels, plans, pricing, device support, and more.

Sling TV Price

There are two base channel packages available, Sling TV Blue and Sling TV Orange. Both plans cost $40 a month. You can subscribe to both the Blue and Orange packages at a discounted rate of $55 per month.

Please note that the Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose area stream your local ABC, NBC, and Fox channels if you subscribe to the Blue or the Blue+Orange Plan. Therefore those plans will cost $5 more per month in just those areas.

Sling also offers the ability to add channels to these base packages through   “Channel Extras.” These add-on packages typically add $6-$11 per month to the cost of Sling TV. Sling also provides a “Total TV” deal that gives subscribers access to Sling Orange and Blue and all the add-on channel packs. We will go into more detail on Sling TV’s channel offerings below.

Channels on Sling TV

The table below is a breakdown of Sling TV packages and the channels each package offers. Sling offers add-on packages, as well. The availability of add-on packages varies between the services. If a channel is available on an add-on you will see a letter corresponding to the following service.

  • S = Sports Extra and costs $11 more per month
  • C = Comedy Extra and costs $6 more per month
  • N = News Extra and costs $6 more per month
  • K = Kids Extra and costs $6 more per month
  • L = Lifestyle Extra and costs $6 more per month
  • HW = Hollywood Extra and costs $6 more per month
  • HL = Heartland Extra and costs $6 more per month

Sling TV also offers premium channels like Showtime. For those channels, I display the price in the table. We cover these packages in more detail later in this article.

If the channels on sling TV aren’t what you are looking for, we cover several channel packages from other live TV streaming services in the list below:

  • Hulu Live Channel List
  • YouTube TV Channel List
  • Philo TV Channel List
  • fuboTV Channel List
  • Vidgo Channel List
  • DIRECTV STREAM Now Channel list

I detail the various Sling TV offerings in the Sling TV Packages section of this article. First, I wanted to cover the devices you can use to watch Sling TV, set it up, and provide some information on the overall user experience.

Sling TV Devices

All Sling TV Channel options work on Windows and Mac PCs and laptops, Android and iOS devices, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Nexus player, Xbox One, 4th Generation Apple TV, Chromecast, and more.

Here are some tips and information for the more popular streaming devices.

Sling TV on Roku

Sling TV supports Roku streaming devices. Setting up Sling TV on Roku requires a Roku account. Once you have a Roku account, follow these steps to install the app:

  1. Add Sling TV to your Roku account.
  2. Follow the instructions presented.
  3. From your Roku, check for updates by following these steps: Press the Roku Home button > Settings > System > System update > Check now.

Sling TV on Amazon Fire TV

Sling TV occasionally has promotions available for Amazon Fire TV. Check here for the latest deals. Once you sign up for Sling TV, simply download the Sling TV app from the Amazon App Store and sign in.

Sling TV User Interface

The “My TV” menu allows users to mark their favorite shows, so they appear in the “Favorite” ribbon. That means you will never have to search for the new episode of your favorite show again.

You can also add your most-watched channels to the “My Channels Ribbon.” This is a fantastic feature as you can pull up your most-watched networks in one click. There is also a “Continue Watching” ribbon, so you pick up where you left on a show you stopped watching.

The new interface also features a mini-guide that you can pull up while watching a program. You continue watching your show while scrolling through what’s on other available channels at the foot of the screen.

Other features include “On Now,” which allows you to see live program options by genres like “sports” or comedy for easy navigation of live TV. There is also a series view that makes it easy to search for a specific episode of a series. You can see which episodes you’ve already watched, making it easy to find the next one you want to play.

Cloud-Based DVR

Sling TV’s Cloud-based DVR is available on Amazon Fire, Roku, Android, and Apple TV devices. Each Sling TV package comes with 50 hours of cloud DVR storage and includes the following:

  • 50 hours of cloud DVR storage
  • Watch recordings anytime, anywhere
  • Record multiple programs simultaneously with no conflicts.
  • Keep recordings as long as you want with no expiration
  • Space is easily managed as Sling TV will make room for new recordings by deleting your oldest ‘watched’ recording when capacity is full

Subscribers can increase the storage on the cloud DVR feature on any Sling TV package. The cost is $5 more per month and bumps the storage up to 200 hours.

Sling TV On Demand

Sling TV offers an on-demand selection similar to what you would find with a cable TV subscription. Most channels even allow you to watch a show up to three days after it airs, even if you forgot to set the DVR. Your Sling TV user name and password can also work to unlock content on various channel apps called “TV Everywhere Apps.” The table below shows which apps allow you to use Sling TV as a provider to unlock additional on-demand content.

How to Subscribe to Sling TV

You can sign up for Sling TV through their website. If you decide to subscribe, you can cancel anytime, as there is no contractual obligation to the service.

Sling TV Troubleshooting

If your Sling TV service ever lags or buffers, try the following steps:

  1. Make sure you have the latest software or firmware update for your streaming device. Depending on what you are using to stream, verify you have the latest Sling TV App.
  2. Whenever possible, use Ethernet. If you have an 802.11ac router and an AC compatible streaming device, like Roku, that will work also. It’s my experience that home wireless installations are sub-optimal for streaming video. That’s not to say yours is, but using wired connections eliminates many variables when it comes to poor streaming quality.
  3. If you already have a streaming device, then I wouldn’t recommend getting a new one. However, I find that Sling TV works best on Roku.

The Bottom Line

Sling TV is perfect for those contemplating canceling cable as it makes for a smooth transition to a streaming-based TV solution. Consumers need to be aware that Sling TV isn’t a streaming service like Hulu’s Streaming library or Netflix. Sling TV focuses on watching live TV over the internet, which it does very well. Those purchasing Sling TV and expecting a vast on-demand library may be disappointed.

However, Sling TV does offer package flexibility. Of all the services we’ve reviewed, it’s the most A La Carte. Ultimately, if you currently have cable and are looking for an easy way out, Sling TV may be just what you need. It’s a very good service, and I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
